Julian Frank’s first encounter with electronic music came with his first computer in 1996, when he moved to Rome. There he met lo-fi maverick TopforTom and in 1998 they founded brainstorm – initially a name for their collaborative work with artists from different backgrounds and genres.
Subsequently, with the launch of www.brainstormlab.org in 2003, the concept grew into a network of collaborating artists – among whom designers, video and music makers - and a space on which to host the work produced.
That same year Julian moved back to London to study film and video. During university he specialized in animation production and enhanced his study of original foley recording, audio and video editing, sound design and live performance.
Since then he has experimented with different techniques, genres, mediums, programs and people from a large variety of backgrounds, produced and collaborated on music videos, short films and video art, organized and helped organize a number of events (brainstorm and non) and performed live at a number of clubs, pubs, venue’s, benefit gigs and squat parties in Europe.
In April and May he was invited to collaborate with the tour organized by MOM bookazine and RAS bookstore gallery. During that time live sets and animation projections with a number of artists took place in Barcelona, Rome, London and Milan.
"JFrank06" presents some of his audacious experimental tracks, and is an ideal introduction to the Brainstorm Lab universe.
