Mike Marques is a vocalist, composer and electronic producer with an ear for category defying, genre bending and poptronica. Australian born Marques (a.k.a miQue) has been fascinated with sound from an early age, building his first drum kit (from used paint cans) at the age of 8.
Taking inspiration from the kitsch to the perverse, 29 year old Marques infuses his vocals & tightly arranged music with the DNA of his roots and love of juxtaposing unexpected sounds – everything from stiletto-esque electro funk to antique film scores, from scratchy bi-lingual doo wop soul to beat bending electronica finds a home in miQue’s sound.
Currently based in Tokyo, Japan, he has collaborated with a diverse array of artists as a vocalist, producer and composer in the Tokyo/Sydney electronic, performance art, and noise/improvisation underground.
Collaborations have included writing music for multi-media theatre crew Sin Titulo, Tokyo dance ensemble Ju-gong, the Scilli Disques, Flyrec and Sounddispatch labels as well as performing at the monthly Sundown and Test Tone, Tiger events in Tokyo.
Live, miQue is a fragmented cabaret of snazzy showmanship and snotty punkmanship – bringing to mind a bygone era of song and dance men gate crashing an electric ho-down.
Armed with a powerbook, a few microphones, an array of pedals and versatile voice – miQue creates an atmosphere of fine aural intercourse.
In 2006 Vaatican Records (France) included miQue’s Track Chikbui on their label sampler and have scheduled an E.P release for December. Early 2007 will see the debut album release on Japanese label Scilli Disques.
